Facts About the Youthful Appearance of Skin:
Many people are familiar with the term “Epidermis.” The Epidermis is the outer layer of the skin - it is composed of four or five (depending on the part of the body) different sections. We treat the epidermis - the stratified squamous epithelium - it is what your eyes see in the mirror every day.
The facial epithelium (surface skin) is typically exposed to many adverse environmental conditions that ultimately affect its appearance. Some of these conditions you encounter daily include:
- Industrial fallout
- Hard water
- Harsh soaps and cleansers
- Artificially cooled air (yes, that air conditioning blowing right on your face!)
- Sunlight, filtered or not
- Wind-blown pollutants
- Bacteria, fungi, parasites, and more...
In addition, genetic factors, that are not yet fully understood, may also determine your overall youthful (or aged) appearance. However, Western scientists who study the eptihelium's aging process have made great strides. Evidence suggests that the rejuvenation mechanisms (that’s new cell growth) of skin is influenced by at least three well-known vitamins:
- Vitamin A (retinol)
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin E (or derivatives thereof)
Additionally, exfoliates (agents of surface skin removal) are also thought to stimulate rejuvenation mechanisms, while certain heavy metals may improve firmness or tone of skin.
But that’s not where your wrinkled skin begins. Skin cells begin deep in the epidermis, moving up through the layers, changing in shape and composition. As they change, they fill with keratin. After about four weeks (27 days), the skin sloughs off.
What should you do about your appearance? Can you modify the look of 30 or so layers of dead cells? In short, yes. The way that most go about it is drastic, or false. You want a solution that works, improves your appearance, but doesn’t leave you looking like a candied ham a week after the holidays.
